Travelling To Denpasar

Travelling To Denpasar photoDENPASAR is Bali’s bustling provincial capital. Some older buildings predate the Dutch invasion of 1906, and there are still some white-walled, red-tiled structures dating from colonial times. On the streets can be seen several statues commemorating heroes of Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Around the main street, Jalan Gajah Mada, are shop-houses built by Chinese, Arab and Indian traders. Shopkeepers from all over Bali buy wholesale here.

In Denpasar, there is Pasar Badung. This is a lively market full of color and excitement located in Jalan Gajah Mada. The extensive flower section is not to be missed – exotic blossoms used in religious offerings are a major commodity on Bali. The fruit, vegetable and fish market is full of spectacular tropical harvests. Bargains can be found among the textiles, baskets, mats and traditional dancers’ costumes. There is also Taman Puputan in Jalan Udayana and Jalan Surapati. A bronze statue in this large square (once the site of Denpasar’s palace) commemorates the puputan (Bali War) of 1906.

Bali Hotel, in Jalan Veteran 3, was built in 1928, and once the only luxury hotel in Bali, the Bali Hotel has welcomed famous guests including Charlie Chaplin and Noel Coward. The open pavilion on the opposite side of Jalan Veteran was built to stage dances for guests. Seen here were many great performers who helped to make Balinese dance world-famous.

Taman Werdhi Budaya, also known as the Bali Arts Centre, this is an attractive if under-used complex with extensive gardens, an art museum, several indoor theatres and an outdoor amphitheatre located in Jalan Nusa Indah. There are frequent dance and music performances, but no set program. The centre is a good place to come to during the heat of the day. The permanent collection of sculptures and paintings reflects the art world of the l970s and 1980s. More recent works are shown in rotating exhibitions. Information can be found in the Bali Post newspaper and tourist magazines.
